But at the same, even IF they actually start committing to it, then chances are they won't find their routine fun enough to carry on, which eventually results in them gaining more weight.
So, people look for other "excercises" that are fun and also beneficial to them at the same time. Indoor games are a good way to go about it, especially Table Tennis.
However, that doesn't mean you drop everything and just start playing Table Tennis to get fit. This is because Table Tennis mainly utilizes certain parts of the body such as your legs and your shoulders, IF you're playing casually. You CAN involve other parts of the body, such as abdomen and back, forearm, obliques by being more competitive. In order to that tho, you're gonna have to learn the basics of the game and get a skilled opponent.
But playing is still better than sitting on them glutes. You could burn around 200-350 calories per hour even if you're a beginner. Whilst, professionals with a lot more footwork and energy into their shots can burn around 500-600 calories. For an indoor sport, that is pretty good.
This is also surprising considering the fact that many people think that it's just one of those stand and deliver games. You still have to move around a lot to get closer to the ball and hit it.
What this does is, you're burning calories and having fun too. You could integrate Table Tennis into your daily regimen to shake up your routine and make it more fun. This way, you would look forward to you regimen (I mean I would look forward to it).
You could even use it as warm-up for your exercises (especially leg days) because it stretches and activates your quads, glutes and calves when you play. And if you train more and learn Table Tennis techniques, you can easily take that calories expenditure beyond 300.
Beyond losing calories, it also improves your concentration and eye-hand coordination. Since this is such a fast paced game, it's important to be good at these characteristics. It's not easy at first, let me tell you that, but over time, you do realize that you have gotten better and translates into other real-life scenarios without even you realizing it!!
Plus, there is a lower chance of injury compared to other games. Ofcourse, if you exert a lot of pressure, you do eventually end up getting hurt. But since there's not a lot of heavy lifting or force required to make those shots, it's less injury prone. But these chance do increase dramatically when you're playing competitively since there's a lot of quick movement required. Knee injuries arw common in this sport if the knee is not well rested.
Yes, other outdoor sports such as football, tennis, cricket, hockey will help you lose more calories but I think it's safe to say that it's pretty inconvenient. Some people may not be interested in playing that particular sport or may have to travel to get to their playing destinations which takes up a lot of time. Hence, Table Tennis is much more convenient and saves time. You could get a Table and place it in your room, office and just get started. No hassle! (Well, apart from setting up the table haha).
I hope this encourages you to pick up Table Tennis and help you move further towards your fitness goals!!
